The objectives of this study were to investigate nurses’ ego states manifested by ego gram and human relationship. The data collection for the study was carried from 15th to 20th of March in 1999. The subjects of study were the 86-person nurses who were employed in two general hospitals in Kwang-Ju.
The measurement tools for ego state used in this study were the ’50-items’ changed and modified by Chun Suk-Kyun(1994).
The study made use of the SAS program to analyze the collected data and utilized percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and Pearson’s correlation.
The study summarizes the finding as follows ;
1. The mean sore of Critical Parent was 23.5, Nurturing Parent was 32.8, Adult was 29.1, Free Child was 27.6, Adopted Child was 25.3.
2. The subjects’ score of human relationship was the mean 89.2 ranged from 69 to 113. Human relation has the subordinate spheres which are composed of communication, satisfaction degree, openness, understanding, familiarity, confidence and sensitivity. Each score shows that communication is the mean 19.0, understanding 14.5, satisfaction degree 14.3, openness 13.0, intimacy 11.2, trust 10.0 and sensitivity 6.7 in order.
3. The fists hypothesis was accepted partially. The group that is high Nurturing Parent and Adult ego state showed higher human relation than that of the lower group(=-3.25, p=.001 ; t=-1.72, p=.05). The group that is low Adopted Child ego state showed higher score inhuman relation than that of the higher group(t=4.24, p=.001).
4. The second hypothesis was accepted partially. Nurturing Parent ego state(r=.47, p=.0001). Adult ego state(r=.32, p=.002). Adopted Child ego state(r=-.41, p=.0001) showed statistically significant correlation.
Seen upon the above-mentioned findings, through Nurturing Parent ego state, Adult ego state is improved and Adopted child ego state is reduced, the result of this study can provide the fundamental data to develop a transactional analysis program to improve human relationship.
